Research Project Overview and Description:
This project upgrades an Augmented Reality (AR) mobile application into an AR/AI integrated tourism application to enhance archaeological tourism in Armenia’s Vedi River Valley. It serves as a digital hub, connecting physical heritage with local culture and bridging visitors to local communities. Using markerless and multi-sensor AR tracking techniques, it combines 3D reconstructions of ancient ruins with archaeological and community-based narratives for immersive experiences. It also integrates an AI-powered travel planning assistant to generate personalized itineraries. Field tests verify the application features high usability and practical value, delivers strong immersion, deepens understanding and emotional connection.
Research Outcome:
A cross-platform (Android/iOS) AR/AI mobile application with multilingual functionality (English, Armenian, Russian); an open-source research archive of development code, documented oral histories, and local tourism resource analysis maps; user evaluation reports; and two academic journal submissions on field investigation as well as the design and evaluation of the AR/AI application.
