The ATL Game Library is a collection of physical games maintained by the Arts Tech Lab (ATL) to support teaching, learning, research, and experimentation involving video games.
The collection includes a range of titles spanning multiple generations of gaming platforms, from classic retro systems to modern consoles. These games serve as valuable resources for exploring topics such as game design, user experience, storytelling, digital culture, software preservation, and the evolution of interactive technologies.
To support research, teaching, and preservation efforts, ATL has developed a number of emulator-based environments for selected retro gaming platforms. Currently, we have the following games available for emulation:
- “The Super Business Adventure” (Japanese) for the Super Famicom
- “Trendy Drama” (Japanese) for the Super Famicom
- “The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask” for the Nintendo 64
- “Final Fantasy X” for the PlayStation 2
These systems allow HKU students and staff to access and study historical game software in a controlled and legally managed environment without requiring original hardware. The emulation environment is intended for:
- Game studies and digital humanities research
- Interactive media and design education
- Preservation and archival research
- Comparative analysis of historical game technologies
- Classroom demonstrations and workshops
More games may be added to our physical collection and our emulation environments in the future.
Access Requests
Students, faculty members, and staff who wish to use the emulation systems for legitimate teaching, learning, and research purposes may submit a request to the lab. Access will be granted subject to availability, licensing considerations, and the intended academic use of the materials.
