Before It Disappears: An Online Archive for Culture and Memory
Project Overview
Cultural memory is often fragile because it depends on objects, places, voices, images, and personal recollections that may not survive urban change or generational transition. As neighborhoods are rebuilt and everyday practices disappear, important traces of a city’s cultural life can become difficult for younger generations, newcomers, and former witness to access. This research aims to build an online archive to preserve materials before they become scattered or lost by gathering their information including written records, sounds, and so on.

Project Outcomes
This project adopts a qualitative, practice-based research approach to explore how an online archive can support the preservation and transmission of cultural memory. Before building the online archive, the contents should be determined at first. Then researchers will collect multimodal materials related to places, objects, and everyday practices affected by urban change, including photographs, written records, audio recordings, and oral histories. The collected data will be put in Google Sheet. Pictures, audio recordings, videos, and documents (in pdf format) need to be converted to Url. Then write JavaScript html for the frontend, using API to connect to the database in Google Sheet.
