Future Memories - The Hong Kong Imaginaries Initiative Research
Project Overview
Utilizing open source geospatial data from the HK government geospatial lab, the initiative aims to use latest visualization technological to procedurally generate a digital twin of the Hong Kong environment for pedagogical, historical and cultural archiving, the immersive virtual reality of a digital Hong Kong will create immense value for digital pedagogy, cultural preservation, virtual tourism and plethora of commercial applications.
As illustrated by the advance mapping technology of Google Earth. The research and initiative was presented at the Jumpstarter 2026 Event as a
showcase for research work of the HKU Arts Tech Lab. The initiative is being used as an illustrative example of AI integration on creative hybrid experiment with large language models on 3D modelling, narrative, image generation, virtual tourism and on creatorship and creatorpreneur IP optimization and value generation for students in the VR/VR 2205, Trajectory 2100, Total Design 2107, Imaginaries 2106 and the new AI GameMaking class.

About the researcher
Dr. Kal Ng has experience in architectural design, film production and virtual reality applications, with a PhD in Architecture at HKU, Dr. Ng specialized in cross-disciplinary practices and creative work in film and animations. He operates an architectural design practice KGE LAB. His research includes immersive spatial cinema, gameplay and interactivities in virtual worlds and cultural imaginaries.
