Research Project Overview and Description
This project explores the intersection of 3D reconstruction and perception through the development of AI avatars within the immersive environment of Half-Life: Alyx. By leveraging virtual reality technology and workstations provided by the Arts Technology Lab, the research investigates how human-like digital representations can enhance user engagement and interaction in virtual spaces. The study focuses on the technical challenges of 3D vision and the cultural implications of avatar representation, aiming to advance the understanding of narrative construction and collective identity in extended reality.

Research Outcome
The project is expected to develop advanced AI avatars within the virtual environment of Half-Life: Alyx, investigating how human-like digital representations enhance user engagement and interaction. Key outcomes include a deeper understanding of 3D reconstruction techniques and the cultural implications of avatar representation in extended reality. The research is anticipated to contribute to the field of 3D perception and narrative construction, leading to peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
About the researchers
Rui Zhang is a PhD student at the Musketeers Foundation Institute of Data Science at the University of Hong Kong, supervised by Prof. Andrew Luo and Prof. Taku Komura. Her research interests include 3D reconstruction, 3D perception, and video generation.
Dr. Tim Gruenewald is an Associate Professor and Director of the American Studies Programme at HKU, specializing in US cultural and visual studies, including virtual reality, film, and museum exhibitions. He leads the eXtended Humanities Lab and researches linear narratives in 360 degree film and VR experiences.
