Lecture One: Developing AI for Researchers in Academic Libraries [25 Sept 2025]
Speakers: Dr. Kam Ming KU (Associate Librarian, Technology Support Services) & Mr. Sun CHUNG (Assistant Systems Librarian), HKU Libraries
This talk provides a practical exploration of how Artificial Intelligence is being implemented in academic libraries to support researchers. We will journey from the foundational concepts of machine learning that powers modern Natural Language Processing (NLP). Through specific case studies from HKU Libraries, attendees will see first-hand the application of AI, supporting projects for digital scholarship, such as the development of comprehensive digital archives (HKU COVID-19 Digital Archive). The session will also address the critical importance of fostering AI literacy among students and faculty, drawing inspiration from successful initiatives like the HKUL’s AI Literacy Series to empower the next generation of researchers.
Lecture Two: Engineering of Cultural Heritage in Digital Humanities [23 Oct 2025]
Speakers: Dr. Kam Ming KU (Associate Librarian, Technology Support Services) & Mr. Sun CHUNG (Assistant Systems Librarian), HKU Libraries
This presentation delves into the dynamic intersection of Artificial Intelligence and cultural heritage, showcasing how technology is revolutionizing research in the digital scholarship. We will explore the creation of projects like FPSL 100th Intelligent Interdisciplinary Search Platform, which provides unprecedented access to ancient heritage. The talk will examine the technical underpinnings of context-aware engineering in interpreting and preserving historical texts. Furthermore, we will introduce the concept of knowledge graphs, demonstrating their power to organize, connect, and reveal new insights within vast collections of cultural heritage information.
Venue: Arts Tech Lab (Room 4.35), 4/F, Run Run Shaw Tower, Centennial Campus
• Up to 50 HKU participants.
• Registration is based on a First Come, First Served basis.

Mr. Sun CHUNG
Dr. Kam Ming KU (Associate Librarian, Technology Support Services), HKU Libraries
Users perceive academic librarians as playing a role in issues of acquisition, description, curation, preservation of print and digital materials. But I think increasingly, beyond those functions, we’re also seeing some very challenging roles in the library. There are a lot of growing areas in the library. We are applying digital transformation by using digital tools, such as AI, IoT and data technologies to produce scholarship and services in new ways.
In the transition of moving from an analogue world to a digital world, my engineering and librarianship background helps to act as a kind of bridge between librarians and scholars in the university to provide vision, leadership, direction, and expertise in the planning, organization, design, and maintenance of our “Digital Library”.
Mr. Sun CHUNG (Assistant Systems Librarian), HKU Libraries
I am responsible for the administration and development support of library applications, integrated library systems such as Ex Libris Alma, and Machine Learning / AI frameworks in our library technology ecosystem. I work closely with other library units to explore and enhance library functionality and workflows.
