Session 1 – Game Design Research: Theory and Practice
Design research is an interdisciplinary field that spans areas such as architecture, product, service, and interaction design, focusing on both the products and the processes of design.
In this talk, Dr. Jussi will explore how game design fits within the broader landscape of design research. Historically, design research has concentrated on methods and processes, but it now addresses a wider range of questions, including the nature of design itself and the types of knowledge it produces.
Despite the growth of general design research, game design has received relatively little academic attention.
This talk will introduce the core principles of game design research, discuss its relationship to broader design fields, and highlight current methodologies for studying game creation and player experience. By positioning game design research alongside established areas of design studies, the talk will emphasize the importance of understanding games as both products and experiences shaped by complex design processes and contexts.”

Session 2 – Game Development Experience Sharing: Developing a Game as a Final Year Project
Abby is a Hong Kong indie game developer. She has game production project experience in both Scotland and Hong Kong, and her team has been working on a 3D party game as her final year project in the previous academic year. She will share her experience in school-based game production projects and give practical advice on delivering a game development project as a final-year thesis. She will also share her point of view on the advantages and disadvantages of being a game developer in Hong Kong and share insights gained from the Tokyo Game Show 2024.
